We will meet in the studio of Metal sculptor Asa Hoyt, an accomplished abstract and functional metalsmith, Asa was on a team of welders who fabricated the Cloud Gate in Chicago’s Millenium Park.
The street address is 2010 E. Hennepin Ave (buildings 10 and 11), Minneapolis, MN 55413. Once you arrive, drive to the back of the compound and enter through the door by the dumpsters. After entering, take a right into the loading dock and then a left into the grotto. The Guild will leave markers to help guide your way.

Due to the first Monday of September falling on Labor Day, we will not be hosting an Eco-Arch Guild meeting this Month. In the mean time, we encourage you to checkout a current exhibition titled “Unbundling the Housing Crisis”.
In recent years, the housing crisis has transformed once vibrant neighborhoods into vacant landscapes of foreclosure and collapse. Much attention has been given to the financial causes of the crisis but few projects have gone beyond that, until now.
In the exhibit “Unbundling the Housing Crisis,” at the Form + Content gallery now through September 5th, 8 interdisciplinary groups of artists, designers, writers, scientists, and thinkers were asked to collaborate, research, create and present projects examining all aspects of the housing crisis.

With roots in the Midwest U.S. and a background in journalism, advertising, sustainable development, graphic and product design, Arlene graduated with a Masters in Humanitarian Design at Design Academy Eindhoven (the Netherlands). She is an occassional design writer and was a 2004-05 Fulbright grant recipient to the Netherlands, where she focused on the visual explanation of product life-cycles. She’s currently fascinated by telling visual stories with brand public relations.
Arlene will share a diagramatic approach to documenting and explaining lifecycle analysis at the West Bank Social Center.

Our speaker Du Jour this month is Anna Grace, an artist and Art Shanty collaborator working with recycled cardboard to create unique structural environments that make an aesthetic statement in a sustainable (and warm) way. An excerpt from the Art Shanty website (http://www.artshantyprojects.org) describes her 2009 project;
We wish to share our belief that paper is no ordinary material; that it can provide extraordinary experiences, tactilely, visually, and most definitely spatially. Not only is our shanty structured of paper tubes; paper is also the unifying element of the project. We wish to extend an invitation to all our guests to be part our creation, and let them in turn create beautiful objects of folded paper (origami). A Paper Shanty exists under the notion that every person is a designer and has the ability to become a part of the art shanty community through participation and activity.

Artist and sustainable furniture maker Joel Cole will be leading our discussion on harvesting, processing and sculpting various woods into beautiful, functional art.
